Christmas 1942
Stormy skies and leaden darkness
Lay above the Jewish land,
Under Roman rule and power
Jews cried out for God’s just hand.
„When comes He?“ they wondered sadly,
„Who can free us from our pain?
Great and Godlike, sent from heaven
To begin His glorious reign?“
Stars, kindle burning fires,
Vanished has the night.
Earth and sky together,
Fill with radiant light.
Hearken! Voices:
Angels sing
Joyful hyms
To the infant King.
In a rough manger
A Child at rest
Hides the world’s hopes
In His baby breast.
Since that great day of wonder,
Two thousand years have passed
And still mankind stands trembling,
No peace has come to last.
A worn and weary people,
Raise loud the single cry:
„Where is our Saviour, when we come
To suffer, and to die?“
Blindly they grope in darkness,
They may not see the light;
The cloud of doubt is heavy,
Veiling it from their sight.
Warfare will continue,
Deadly, savage, wild,
Till all nations find their way
To the Heavenly Child.
Once they kneel together,
With a common creed,
Round the Infants manger,
They have sown the seed
Of a world where Jesus‘
Promise cannot fail:
Giving thus its meaning
